The Cleveland Indians are getting a new team name after more than a century with the “Indians” moniker.

Multiple reports Sunday night, first by The New York Times, broke the news that Cleveland will be moving on from the Indians name. That comes after the club announced in July that it’d be looking into changing the team’s name. The New York Times also reported that Cleveland would initially be moving forward without a name while consulting with the public on a new one, adding that the Indians may keep that nickname in 2021 before moving on to new uniforms and a new name in 2022.

Cleveland’s statement from July on exploring the name change reads as follows:

“We are committed to making a positive impact in our community and embrace our responsibility to advance social justice and equality. Our organization fully recognizes our team name is among the most visible ways in which we connect with the community. We have had ongoing discussions organizationally on these issues. The recent social unrest in our community and our country has only underscored the need for us to keep improving as an organization on issues of social justice. With that in mind, we are committed to engaging our community and appropriate stakeholders to determine the best path forward with regard to our team name.”

At the time of that news, Sporting News brought our suggestions for what the new name could be, leading the list off with Spiders, a popular suggestion on Twitter on Sunday night. SN isn’t the only place with suggestions, though.

Social media weighed in with many options Sunday night after the Times’ report. Here are some that stood out, both good and bad.
