College football may have lost one rivalry when Ohio State vs. Michigan was canceled, but there’s still an all-time great rivalry remaining with Navy taking on Army for the 121st time.

This year’s game will be held at West Point after previously being scheduled to take place at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania would not allow any family or Corps of Cadets and Brigade of Midshipmen to attend, so the schools changed location. This marks the first time since World War II (1943) that the game will be held on the campus of one of the academies. Around 10,000 people are expect to fill Michie Stadium.

Last year Navy defeated Army 31-7 in Philadelphia and holds a 7-3 advantage in the last 10 head-to-head matchups against Army. Both teams run a triple-option offense, so don’t expect much passing. Army is expected to start Tyhier Tyler at quarterback who has completed just one pass this season, while Navy is expected to start freshman Xavier Arline. He would be just the fifth freshman quarterback to every start for the Midshipmen against Army.

While Army (7-2) sports a far better record than Navy (3-6), the Black Knights have faced an easier schedule. Army is an independent and had to string along its schedule the best it could during a pandemic. Three of its wins were against FCS competition. Navy, meanwhile, competes in the American Athletic Conference. The two academies have played one common opponent with Army getting blown out 38-12 by Tulane, while Navy hung on to beat the Green Wave 27-24.

Navy is in current possesion of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, a trophy awarded to the winner of a round robin between Navy, Army and Air Force. Air Force already defeated Navy this season, so an Army win would eliminate the Midshipmen from retaining the trophy.
