“Riverboat Ron” has a way with words.

The Washington Football Team surprised many in their matinee matchup vs. the Steelers on Monday, downing Pittsburgh 23-17 and handing them their first loss in the 2020 season, and such a victory is befitting of a good speech.

Ron Rivera knows as much and delivered a kick-ass speech after the W:

Underdogs win. Hey, it was a hell of a job. Again, make sure everybody understands this more so than anything else: this is about who you guys are. We talked about going out today and playing to our ability, and being the best team today. Had nothing to do with records, had nothing to do with who you are — only on the football field. And that’s what you did. You put it out there, you played your asses off. You guys did some really good things, showing who we can be as a football team. We take ’em one at a time — we take ’em one at a time and we’ll show up to play, I’ll promise you that much. It was a hell of an effort, you deserve it, you deserve the victory.

WEEK 14 PICKS: Straight up | Against the spread

Rivera ended the speech by handing out the game ball to wideout Cam Sims, who secured a one-handed catch to set up a late field goal to give Washington the W.

A lot of credit has to go to Rivera in his first year with Washington: Even at 5-7, Washington is in a tie atop the NFC East with the Giants and has been playing better football in recent weeks. The team has played with fire and energy, and after seeing how much faith Rivera has in his guys, it’s clear they’re playing hard for him.

The Steelers were favored by 6 1/2 points according to some oddsmakers before the game. Washington, now winners of three straight, has a tough schedule to end out the season, starting with the 49ers in Arizona this Sunday.

But hey, anything’s possible if Rivera is pumping these guys up.
