Odell Beckham Jr. won’t be back in 2020. The bigger question might be what uniform he’s wearing in 2021.

Reports and speculation have suggested Beckham could be a trade candidate away from Cleveland in the offseason, with the Browns’ run-heavy offense not necessarily suiting Beckham’s dynamic receiver skill set. Matters are complicated because of the torn ACL Beckham suffered in Week 7 against the Bengals attempting to make a tackle.

Before Beckham’s injury, he had 23 catches for 319 yards and three touchdowns in 2020. That followed a 2019 season with 74 catches for 1,035 yards and four scores. Beckham hasn’t quite shone the way he did in his first three NFL seasons (2014-2016) with the Giants, when he topped 1,300 yards in three consecutive years.

Here’s what you need to know about Beckham’s injury and when he might return for the Browns:

How long will Odell Beckham Jr. be out?

Beckham is out for the remainder of the 2020 NFL season after tearing the ACL in his left knee in Week 7 against the Bengals (Oct. 25). It’s an injury that’s often given a 12-month timeline but occasionally sees players beat that by a few months, so Beckham’s probably got an outside chance of returning for Week 1 in 2021.

The surgery itself took place on Nov. 10, about two weeks after the injury, so at this point it seems safer to speculate Beckham will return early in the 2021 season but maybe not by Week 1.

One NFL Network report has suggested that Beckham could be traded before the 2021 season, an interesting proposition given there’ll be some uncertainty about his return from injury, although NFL players usually seem like their old selves following ACL tears these days.

What is Odell Beckham Jr.’s injury?

Beckham tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The injury resulted after a Baker Mayfield interception. Beckham began running toward the football to attempt to make a tackle, but as he approached a mass of bodies, he planted his left foot awkwardly and appeared to almost leap in pain. The torn ACL was confirmed the following day.

Beckham has been rehabbing his injury and occasionally posts the footage on his Instagram.
